Why Thousands Of Seniors Are Moving To Independent Living To Save Money

Senior independent living communities consist of housing designed for the over 55’s and older. They are usually apartments or condominiums.
Who lives in senior independent living communities?
Residents are seniors who do not require assistance with daily activities or skilled nursing care, but who would benefit from convenient services, senior-friendly surroundings and increased social opportunities with like-minded people. They are especially popular with ‘snowbird’ seniors who wish to downsize or travel freely without the burden of managing a home.
What sort of services can I expect in a senior independent living community?
Services provided can vary but the type of things to expect in a good senior independent living community would be dining services, basic housekeeping and laundry services, transportation, activities, social programs and access to exercise equipment and a program of classes. Some also offer live-in managers, emergency alarm systems, and facilities such as swimming pools, beauty parlors and even spas. What they don’t provide is any sort of health care or assistance with activities of daily living (including medication, dressing and eating). If this sort of support is needed, then a continuing care community is probably more suitable.
What will it cost to live in a senior independent living community?
Monthly costs can vary a lot. It depends on size of apartment, location, community type and services offered. The average total cost for a US one-bedroom independent senior living apartment is currently $2,750 per month. It’s the least expensive of the three primary living options that are currently available in the United States.
