Is Your Scalp Psoriasis Actually Something Else? Learn The Signs

What is it?
Psoriasis is a common skin disorder caused by faulty signals in the immune system, allowing cells to grow faster than they can shed. It appears as raised, reddish, often scaly patches which can sometimes be itchy. It may extend from the scalp to surrounding areas. It’s caused by genetics, stress and certain medications (such as anti-malarials, anti-depressants and some heart medications) can trigger it too.
Severity
Scalp psoriasis can be mild, with patchy flare-ups from time to time. But it can also be severe with thick, crusted sores, intense itching and discomfort. Scratching can lead to infections, so that should be resisted wherever possible.
Diagnosis
Psoriasis can sometimes be mistaken for seborrheic dermatitis as they share symptoms. A dermatologist can usually diagnose psoriasis by looking at the scalp, but sometimes will have to remove a bit of skin to send to the laboratory for analysis.
Treatment
Treatments vary depending on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, the first line of defense is topical treatment applied directly to the scalp. These shampoos, gels, ointments and soaps can be bought over the counter and usually contain coal tar or salicylic acid to reduce inflammation. For moderate to severe cases your doctor may prescribe oral medications such as corticosteroids, Methotrexate, Cyclosporine or a strong Vitamin A or D derivative. Newer options are biologics which are injected into the scalp. Some people also find UV light treatment useful in treating psoriasis.
