Why Most Homeowners Are Secretly Responsible For Their Sewer Pipe Repair Costs

Sewer pipes are not the kind of thing you’re likely to think about very often, but when there’s a problem you need a solution fast. Sewer pipes are always being used so they can get blocked at any time. Many people make the mistake of thinking it’s completely the utility company or local municipality’s responsibility, but actually it’s the homeowner that’s responsible for anything up to the property boundary line.
Problems and solutions
Tree roots can cause issues for sewer pipes. There are machines that can cut through the roots, though they will grow back – a longer term solution is to use a chemical treatment which slows down or kills the root growth.
Clay soil can also cause problems because it corrodes pipes from the outside. Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do about this until the pipe leaks - but it’s something to be aware of. Watch out for slow drainage inside your home which is a key warning sign.
The US has an ageing pipe population – while that might not sound like a big deal, it means cracks, leaks and breakages are more likely. Older pipes are more likely to be made of corrodible materials like clay or cast iron.
Where can I get help?
An online search will help you find local plumbers. It’s always advisable to get professional help, especially in case there’s extra complications. Remember anything on your property (called sewer lines and water lines) is your responsibility but anything outside of that you should contact the water utility.
Insurance
It’s a good idea to check your insurance covers water pipe and sewer problems as fixing them can be costly. If it doesn’t, then think about taking out a separate policy that does.
