Stop Relying On Locks Alone With These Essential Home Security Systems

No matter how safe your neighbourhood is, for true peace of mind it’s a good idea to get a home security system. There are many makes and models on the market so it’s important to choose the right one for your home. A typical home security system will include sensors, cameras, and alarms, and you can expect to pay a monthly fee in return. Make sure you understand if you own, or are just renting your equipment when you sign up - the latter means you can take it with you if you move house.
What’s included
Security monitoring – this can include motion and entry sensors for doors and windows. All security systems should include some level of monitoring.
Automation – some packages include automated thermostat, lighting and locks for added reassurance. It can often be controlled by a smartphone.
Personal response – this is a panic button worn on your person in case of emergencies.
Mobile access – linked to monitoring, this allows you to arm or disarm the system via your phone or computer. Ideally your system will also alert you if any door or window is opened.
Types of response
Landline – if an alarm is triggered, your landline phone calls the security company’s monitoring center. One drawback here is that thieves can easily cut cables if the wires run outside your home.
Broadband – the monitoring system is contacted through your internet connection. As long as you have decent service in your area, this can be a good middle ground.
Cell – the monitoring center is contacted through a cell network that’s separate to your internet or phone line. A good level of service is required.
Professional versus self-installation
Installing a system yourself can save you the installation fees, and the security company will usually have a helpline either with an automated prompt system or a real human being to help you. However you may prefer to get a professional to install it and make sure everything works properly.
