Don't Get Scammed When Hiring A Locksmith With These Essential Safety Tips

Locksmiths can be lifesavers when you’re locked out and no-one can get a spare key to you. But, even in a panic, there are several things to consider when calling one.
Emergencies
If it’s an emergency, and it’s your car, use your roadside assistance plan first if you have one. They will often have a list of approved companies that they can put you in touch with.
Research
For other situations, check that their website if you can and that see if they have a local street address. Many operators are actually from out of town but will pretend they are local.
Estimate
Make sure you get an estimate of the cost of the work, replacement parts and any other extras before the locksmith starts work. Ask if there is a charge for mileage or a minimum call out charge. Also check they are insured for any damage caused.
Identification
Most locksmiths will arrive in a service vehicle with the company logo, and when they do ask for identification and a locksmith’s license if applicable (10 states now require these). If they are legitimate, they should also ask you for identification before agreeing to change any locks to your house. Also, most locksmiths can unlock virtually any door so be cautious if they say that the lock has to be drilled and replaced.
Invoice
When finished they should provide you with an itemized invoice on headed paper that covers parts, labor mileage, and the call out charge.
