Things have certainly changed in the last few years and cell phones are now an essential part of life. Although there are tech-savvy seniors out there, it’s likely that seniors will use their phones more for talking and texting rather than surfing the internet or checking in on social networks. There are plenty of cheap phone plans out there that offer the basics, and a little bit extra for those that want it.
Prepaid or contract?
Depending on useage it’s probably be better to go for a low cost pre-paid plan, rather than committing to a 2 year contract with lots of data capability that might not get used. There are a number of no-contract pre-paid options available from the big networks AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. Pre-paid is also a great choice if you just want a phone for occasional use or emergency calls.
Which carrier?
It’s also worth looking at low-cost carriers that use the major networks but offer cheaper prices. If you do want a contract, Consumer Cellular has simple handsets and coverage through AT&T, and a range of call-based plans. Doro Phone also have a good range starting at $60 for the phone and plans from $10 per month. The Doro Phone handset has big buttons and is easy to use.
Free phones
If you’re receiving certain types of government benefit, you may be eligible for a free phone and free minutes through the Lifetime Assistance Program. It’s definitely worth finding out more if budget is really tight.
