Stop Ignoring These Garage Door Warning Signs Before They Cost You Thousands

Garage doors are often the largest moving component in the home, so whether installing a new one or having repairs done, safety is important - particularly with overhead doors.
Safety
The Government has required a reversing safety feature on manufacturers of garage doors since 1991, so that if any object obstructs the opening mechanism, it will return to its original position. Springs and openers can however degrade over time, so it’s a good idea to test this mechanism yourself occasionally by placing an object in the opening path, but be sure to do so safely. There should also be a manual release system in place, should the automatic function become compromised. This should also be checked from time to time.
Problems
You’ll need to call a professional contractor if the door is jammed, opens only partially, makes a popping or scraping sound or is slower than usual, as cables, springs, bearings or rollers may need to be treated or replaced.
Suitability
If you are looking for a new door to fit an existing structure, durability may be important as well as well as safety features and appearance. Particularly so if you live in a hurricane-prone area, and steel may be a better option than aluminum or wood. If the garage opens into your home, you also need to check that the garage door has adequate insulation.
Checks
When employing a contractor, ensure that you check their licenses and insurance, reviews and experience. It’s also good to hire someone local and travelling time may be included in their charges.
Cost
Try and get 3 detailed quotes from professional contractors and make sure you read their contract carefully. They may quote for the whole job or charge an hourly rate in the region of $30 per hour plus parts. Emergency call outs for garage doors also tend to be much more expensive than for other types of repairs.
