How To Plan An Affordable German Vacation Without Overspending

Many Americans who visit Germany have an ancestral connection to the country, but even if you don’t have that excuse it’s well worth considering a vacation to Germany. The quality of accommodation in Germany is high, and cheap if you stick in the 3* category. Food and drink is cheap too - you may tire of pork by the end of your trip, but you won’t have spent a fortune in the process!

What are the must-see destinations in Germany?

Our top destinations and their associated attractions are:

Munich - located in southern Germany in the state of Bavaria, this part of Germany retains the most German character. Visit in September for Oktoberfest. Places worth a visit nearby are Salzburg in Austria which is around a two hour drive, and Berchesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. Schloss Neuschwanstein is arguably the top sight of all though. Mad King Ludwig’s castle is famous the world over, and is said to have been the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Berlin - following the reunification of Germany, Berlin was reinstated as the capital of Germany. It’s divided history makes for some fascinating sights and the history of this annexed city is on show throughout.

Heidelberg & Rothenburg - two of Germany’s most picturesque towns, and both are situated in the Rhine Valley. The closest airport is Frankfurt. Heidelberg is located on the Rhine and is a charming little town overlooked by the romantic ruins of a great Renaissance castle. This is quintessential Germany! Rothenburg is a little known medieval town that is still surrounded by the original medieval walls (you can even walk them). During the Second World War, as the Nazis were retreating, the town was saved from artillery bombing because itshistoric importance was known by U.S. Assistant Secretary of War, John J McCloy. Amazing right?

Moselle Valley - the river valley of the Moselle is one of Germany’s wine producing regions, and it makes for a spectacular backdrop to a vacation in Germany. There are countless picture-postcard towns and villages, plenty of great hiking, and of course some pretty decent wine! If you are a keen cyclist you can join a cycling tour in this area too. Lasting a few nights you cycle with a group while your luggage is transferred each day to your next destination.

What’s the best way to get around in Germany?

If you want to take in a few different cities on your trip then it’s worth renting a car. Keep in mind that Europeans generally drive stick shift vehicles. If you have to have an automatic vehicle they are readily available, but often carry a premium price. If you don’t want to drive you can make use of Germany’s public transport. You can plan ahead and book tickets online to save money. The train service is safe, efficient and cheap.
