How to Choose the Right Portable Generator for Your Needs

In the face of recent major winter storms like Storm Elliott, many people are looking to buy portable generators so they are prepared for any interruptions to normal power sources. Standby generators offer more power, but portable generators are significantly cheaper, and – of course – can be carried from place to place too.
Portable generators are very useful for day-to-day situations like camping or an outdoors party. They can also make sure a temporary power outage doesn’t mean a freezer full of spoiled food.
What to look for
The most important requirements when looking for a portable generator are reliability and efficiency. A 5,000 watt power is the most common choice for families. That’s enough for a heater, water pump, microwave and fridge should you lose power.
Also, be aware of noise – 71 Db is an acceptable noise level but anything above that might stop you from sleeping or even damage your hearing. Low-oil shutdown is a bonus feature, as it means you don’t have to remember to keep checking the levels all the time.
Sources of power
Portable generators most commonly have the choice of gasoline or diesel power. Gasoline is easy to get hold of but be aware it is more flammable and has a shelf life of 12 months. Diesel lasts between 1.5 years to 2 years and is more cost efficient, though it can be harder to find and noisier to use.
Warranties and post-purchase care
The best warranties available are generally for three years. If you can, make sure there’s a decent customer support back-up for your purchase. This is especially important if you’re knowledge of machinery is minimal. A helpline is ideal in case you have any major problems with your piece of equipment.
