Stop Sweating: How to Fix Your Air Conditioning Without Wasting Money

If it’s 100 degrees outside and your air goes out, it can be quite distressing. So how do you go about getting your air-conditioning repaired?
Can I repair my air-conditioning myself?
If you have a flair for handyman type jobs and are comfortable around electricity, you may well be able to repair your air-conditioning units yourself. Consult a self-help guide and walk yourself through the checklist that they recommend. Many air-conditioning faults are pretty common. If you have a central air-conditioning system it is advisable to call a repairman.
How about if I need to call someone?
There are plenty of repair companies out there but we recommend that you ask a neighbor for a recommendation or look for a company with a good reputation. Call around a few companies to find out which company can get to you most quickly.
What can I do to stay cool in the meantime?
Apart from taking cold showers it’s worth investing in some floor fans. If you have ceiling fans you should definitely switch them on to high but a floor fan will also circulate the air around you. When working properly the fans should lower the temperature at least a few degrees and give you the feeling of cooling even if it’s still pretty hot. One other short term solution it to rent or buy a portable air-conditioner. Though these are not as efficient as central air-conditioning they are more effective than fans.
How can I prevent this happening in the future?
Any good air-conditioning engineer will tell you to get your A/C serviced every 6 months and to change your filters regularly. You can sign up for a maintenance program with an air-conditioning company to reduce the cost of regular check-ups. Ask an engineer for their recommendation.
