Cruise Season Is Here. Have You Booked Your Dream Getaway Yet?

With the cruise lines adding more and more ships every year, the cruise industry is the fastest growing sector of the travel industry. Every safe corner of the world is served by at least one cruise company, and there are few places that you would want to vacation that you can't access from a cruise these days.
I have never cruised before. Where do I start?
We recommend starting with a budget and a list of the kind of things you might want to do on your cruise. Different itineraries take in different locations and those locations determine what the shore excursions will be. Think about whether or not you'll be happy with an inside cabin, or whether you'd prefer to be able to see the ocean (or even get outside on your private balcony).
Where can I get the best advice?
Seasoned cruisers usually have their favorite cruise companies picked out and have 101 hints on how to get the best value for your vacation. With that in mind, it is always worth asking for word of mouth recommendations.
It might also be wise to seek a travel agent who specializes in cruises. A good travel agent can advise you on everything down to the level of what cabin will be right for your vacation.
How do the cruise lines differ?
Cruise companies operate a little differently to airlines. Whereas each aircraft combines seats in coach, business class and first class, there are cruise companies out there that specialize in a certain category of cruising.
For example, Oceania and Regent specialize in ultra luxury cruising on big ships, whilst Seabourn and Silverseas specialize in mid-size ultra luxury cruising. At the more affordable end of the cruise lines are Carnival and MSC Cruises for example.
There are also specialist cruise lines to consider. Top of the tree for families has to be Disney Cruise Line and in the adventure market Un-Cruise Adventures.
Where's a safe place to start with cruising?
A Caribbean cruise will suit those who have never been overseas before, and can be as short as 3 nights if you aren't sure yet that cruising is for you. Also on a Caribbean cruise 99% of your fellow passengers will be fellow Americans, so you'll feel right at home while you figure out if cruising is your dream vacation.
Are there hidden costs when you book a cruise?
There can be hidden costs. You will be expected to leave a significant gratuity for your servers and your cabin assistant when your cruise ends. Many cruise lines include all drinks and food onboard the ship, but when you are ashore expect to pay for meals.
Excursions are always extra and the costs can be quite expensive if you book through your cruise line. We have name just a few of the costs that first time cruisers can miss, but ask your travel agent for their expertise.
There are differences depending on what you book and what cruise line you travel with. If you want something that covers most of your costs let your agent know that when you come to book.
