France is the largest country in Western Europe and one of the most influential in the world. With a population of 66 million, the country encompasses medieval port cities, tranquil villages and Mediterranean beaches, not to mention the famous boulevards, gourmet cuisine and fabulous fashion. A trip to France is the vacation of a lifetime.
Top places to visit in France
The capital of France is Paris, and it boasts wonders such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum (home of the world famous Mona Lisa), and of course the Eiffel Tower. Other areas in France not to be missed are Brittany and Normandy in the northwest, the Loire Valley, the regions of Champagne, Burgundy and Provence, and the mountain ranges of the Alps and the Pyrenees.
When to visit France
You can appreciate France at any time of year. The spring offers mild weather, long days and pretty flowers. Summertime is a lively season, but be warned August can be hot and humid, especially in the capital when most Parisians head out of the city. The French Riviera will be extremely crowded in the summertime, but buzzing with life. You are likely to experience fewer crowds and milder weather in the Autumn. The holiday season is a festive time to visit, with Christmas markets and traditional European decorations and customs.
Getting around
Most international flights arrive at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, the largest in France. Other international hubs are Bordeaux in southwest France, and Lyon Saint Exupery airport in the Rhones-Alpes region. If your vacation is based in the French Riviera, you can fly to Nice, but it usually requires a layover in another European city, such as Frankfurt in Germany or Amsterdam in Holland.
Visa and passport requirements
Most non-European Union nationals will require a visa for a tourist stay of 90 days or more. If you plan to stay for longer, you will need to submit a short-stay visa application to the French Consulate before you travel.
