Spain, located on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, has been a firm vacation favorite for sun seeking Europeans since the 1960’s. While it has plenty of sun and seaside, it’s got lots more to offer too.
Where to visit in Spain
Andalusia is the heart of traditional Spain - flamenco dancing, tapas and long siestas. The Basque Country straddles the Pyrenees Mountains along the French border, and is stunning. It is fiercely independent with its own language and personality. Barcelona and Catalonia hug the coastline of the Costa Brava, with beautiful sandy beaches and serene blue seas. Barcelona has famous architecture and a buzzing nightlife. The Costa del Sol is a famous tourist destination with a vibrant seaside culture, and lastly the capital Madrid is not to be missed, with its elegant Baroque buildings and historic plazas.
When to visit Spain
Spain is blessed with an ideal Mediterranean climate. Barcelona and the region of Catalonia in the northeast enjoy especially mild weather. Southern Spain is the sunniest part of the country and the Costa del Sol is a sun worshipper’s dream. Late Spring and early fall are the best times for a beach vacation. August is the most crowded, as that’s when the Europeans take their vacations. The Basque country offers less touristy ‘off the beaten track’ destinations, but this lush region has the most rainfall also. Visitors should pack a light waterproof, even in the summer.
Getting there
Spain is served by many airports, so look at where is the nearest to your chosen destination. Madrid-Barajas Airport is the busiest for international flights and Barcelona the next busiest. Main hubs from the US are JFK and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.
Visa and passport requirements for Spain
Italy is a member of the European Union, so Americans don’t usually need a visa or other entry requirements unless you plan to work or stay longer than 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of departure and have two blank pages for the entry stamp.
