Many states don’t require ATV (ATV stands for All Terrain Vehicle) insurance, so you may think that you don’t need it, but ATVs can cause some serious damage and it may really be worth your while getting the protection that insurance can provide.
Do I need it?
You may not mind having to cover repairs to your own vehicle yourself, but if damage occurs to someone else’s property, or they are seriously injured, it could be very costly if you’re not covered.
Why do I need separate coverage?
Normal auto insurance won’t cover you for all possible losses with your ATV, whilst specific ATV insurance can make up the short fall if someone else causes an accident and their own cover is insufficient. Your homeowners policy may cover you if you have an accident or injure someone else on your own land, or if it’s damaged or stolen, but won’t if you’re somewhere else. Your home policy deductible will also likely be increased, depending on the age of the vehicle if you have to make a claim.
What to look for?
Obviously the cheapest insurance is attractive, but you need to make sure that you are properly covered. As well as repair and replacement costs for a collision with your ATV, you should ensure you are covered for bodily injury and the costs of injuries you have caused to others. Cover for damage caused to the property of others, non-collision repair or replacement for e.g. fire or vandalism and medical payments if you are hurt in an accident should also be included.
You may also want cover for attachments, but bear in mind that not all insurance companies will cover all of these so you need to read the fine print.
