Why Switching To An Online Savings Account Will Boost Your Interest Earnings

Choosing an online savings account can offer you some serious savings and benefits. An online bank doesn’t have the same costs as a traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ bank does, so you’ll find an online account can often have a higher rate of interest. There’s often less charges, too.
Opening an account
This is a simple process and – obviously – can be done online. You’ll need your Social Security number, a form of ID (driver’s license or a passport) and the minimum account balance (if applicable). Make sure you give yourself enough free time to complete the process.
Get the best account for you
Interest rates will vary across accounts. Make sure you research online across a range of banks, or use a comparison tool, so you are getting the best rate. Examine your own banking patterns and offset interest rates against any charges you think you may have to pay. For example if you regularly make withdrawals, look for a bank that offers fee-free ATM use. However, if you tend to keep quite a high balance and don’t do much with it, you may just want a basic account with the highest interest rate possible.
Read the T&Cs
Every account is different so make sure you read all the small print carefully. As a general rule, keeping a minimum balance avoids maintenance fees, though exact amounts will vary across banks. Remember a savings account is not a substitute for a checking account and it has a limited number of transactions per month. This applies whether your account is with an online bank or not.
