Why Switching To An Exclusive Provider Organization Plan Could Slash Your Costs

An exclusive provider organization plan (EPO) is a managed care plan where services are covered only if you use doctors, specialists, or hospitals in the plan’s network. Any treatment provided outside of the organization’s network must be paid for separately.
Why take out an exclusive provider organization plan?
Exclusive provider organization plans tend to be cheaper than other health care plans as there is less flexibility, so they are great if you do not want to see a specific consultant or have preferences. It also makes healthcare plans affordable for those people who are less well off than others. With an exclusive provider organization plan, payment is usually per treatment, so you do not have to pay out a monthly fee. You pay only when it’s needed and you know the amount, as it’s agreed it when you take out the policy.
What are the downsides?
The one big drawback with an exclusive provider organization plan is that it can be restrictive, as you can only use the services of those companies that are included in the organization’s network. So if you visit your nearest hospital for an emergency, for example, you will still have to pay for this.
What to look out for when choosing your plan
Check the size of the network that is available to you, and how geographically widespread it is if you travel. You want access to the largest number of doctors, hospitals and other health care professionals, to ensure you have as much flexibility as possible should you need to call on their services.
