If you are thinking about getting a pet for the first time, then there are a few things to consider. While getting a pet can be a wonderful addition to your home and family, it does involve a level of commitment that means it’s not suitable for everyone.
What pet would suit me?
If you haven’t had a pet before, then it may be better to ‘start off’ with something that requires a low level of commitment like a fish or a hamster. These can be great for kids and don’t need too much regular attention. While dogs are wonderfully loyal companions, they will require love and affection. Cats and dogs require feeding twice a day, and most breeds of dogs will need to be walked at least once a day.
You also need to make sure everyone in the home is in agreement, as whatever pet you choose will need to be a part of your family. Think about what will happen if you are away – who will look after the pet?
Trial period
Fostering or looking after someone else’s pet may be a good way to assess if it’s the right decision for you. For example, sometimes allergies only become apparent once you have the pet in your home. A trial period is ideal before making a permanent decision that may be hard to reverse.
Time and money
Depending on what kind of pet you have, there are likely to be demands on your time and energy, and of course money. You can’t leave a dog at home all day, so if you work full time it may be better to get a lower maintenance pet such as a cat.
There’s costs to think about too – not just food, but also the cost of accessories like food bowls, beds and toys. All conscientious pet owners should also factor in vet bills and vaccinations, which can be very expensive. If you don’t have family or friends that can help out while you’re away, then you need to consider kennel or cattery charges as well.
