Muscle cars are an iconic part of US culture – popular in the 60s and 70s, even now they are in huge demand all around the world. Muscle cars usually have 2 doors though some types do have 4, and all have big, powerful V8 engines. Designed for the street, they are distinct from normal sports cars, and are noisy, fast and fun.
Types
Opinions about the best are divided but the most popular brands and models nowadays include the Dodge Charger, Ford Mustang GT, Chevrolet Gran Camaro and the Nissan GTR. The rarest vintage muscle cars are the 1967/1970 Dodge Coronet R/T 426 Convertible and the 1960 Chevrolet Corvette ZL-1, of which only 2 and 3 were produced.
Buying a Muscle Car
Muscle cars can make great investments, but there are a few things to consider. Vintage models will require more maintenance and you need to consider where you will be able to house it, bearing in mind it’s probably a rust magnet. Modern versions are relatively easy to maintain but all of them will use a lot of gas, thanks to those massive engines.
You also need to check whether a vintage model meets current emissions regulations in your State, if you want to cover it with ‘normal’ insurance. If insured as an ‘antique’ then the tests and regulations will be less troublesome, but you won’t be able to drive it very far.
