If you’re looking to make a big investment such as your first home or a new car, you might need some help in getting the cash to pay for it. This is where loans come in. There are many ways to borrow money from financial institutions, such as banks, in the US. What you choose will depend on your circumstances, how much you want to borrow, and why.
Personal loans
These are loans that a bank or other financial institution will make to you, with an agreed repayment period and with a fixed interest rate. They can be secured or unsecured. If you choose secured, then you may get a better interest rate but you risk losing the secured item (usually your home) if you can’t make repayments. Generally personal loans can range from several thousand dollars up to $100,000.
Mortgages
For many people, buying their first home will be the biggest loan they ever take. Consider a fixed-rate mortgage, where the interest rate is fixed for the length of the mortgage, versus an adjustable-rate mortgage where it will track a market index. The second option can be good if rates go down, but it’s sensible to choose a mortgage that caps interest rates should the market go the other way.
How do I get a loan?
To get a loan, you need to apply via the bank or financial institution for the loan product you want. They will consider your credit history, your salary, and how much you are asking for. The lender will use your credit report to help decide if you can have the loan or not, so it’s a good idea to check yours with one of the three credit reporting agencies in the US – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – to make sure that everything is correct and in order. You can get a credit report for free.
What’s in it for the lender?
The bank will make money by charging you interest on your loan. Make sure you only take out a loan that you can afford to pay off, and shop around to get the best deal for you.
