Stop Overpaying For Vehicle Insurance With These Insider Savings Tips

Insurance can sometimes seem like a waste money, and not all states required vehicles to be insured, but it can offer very important protection if you are faced with large repairs bills or claims because someone has been injured. So if you don’t want to have to meet claims out of your own pocket, it’s best to protect yourself before the event.

What type of cover you get will depend on how much protection you want and what type of vehicle you have.

Comprehensive Insurance

This usually covers loss of the vehicle resulting from fire, theft, vandalism, collisions with animals, storms, floods, earthquakes, falling objects and accidental glass breakage. It doesn’t cover you for accidents involving other vehicles for which you will need Collision Cover.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance covers you against claims for bodily injuries caused to someone else and damage to someone else’s property, including their vehicle. There will be a limit to how much can be claimed.

Medical Cover

Some states have Personal Injury Protection laws meaning that if someone is injured in an accident you can claim against your insurance company rather than having to go to court to prove who is at fault, but again there will be limits to how much can be claimed.

It’s also possible to get cover for medical expenses only for anyone injured while traveling in your car, or if you or family members are traveling in someone else’s. A separate Catastrophic Medical Expenses policy will cover you in the event of abnormally high medical bills.

Uninsured Motor Insurance

You should also have Uninsured Motor Insurance, so that you can claim against your own policy if another driver causes an accident and doesn’t have insurance or the means to pay. A similar policy for other drivers who are under-insured is also available.

Premiums

These will depend on your age, and is particularly high for men under 27 and those living in inner cities. It will also take into account the type and make of car, how expensive it is to repair, your driving experience and record, what you use your car for, how many miles you do, who will drive it and other factors. You should also receive a discount if your accident record is good.

You may also be eligible for discounts if you are over 50 or 55, have low mileage, have been on refresher driving courses and the car has good safety features.
