Auto services can range from the good, to the bad and the ugly - and can cost you a lot of time, money and inconvenience. So it’s important to do your homework before handing over your prize possession to them.
What to watch out for
It’s not unheard of for auto shops to carry out additional repairs that don’t need doing or charge you for repairs they haven’t done at all. Sometimes they’ll charge for work that is actually still covered by your warranty. They can also advertise great deals but pressure you to buy more services once you take the bait, including elaborate maintenance packages. You also need to hire someone who knows what they’re doing.
Protect yourself
Insist on a written estimate. This is required in most states and the shop has to contact you if it is going to rise by more than 10%. If not, write out your own limit and give it to them. Let the mechanic know that you want your parts back – that will warn him that you will be watching closely, and if they can be resold and he wants to keep them, ask for compensation. It’s also a good idea to ask for a second opinion, especially for expensive repairs, even if it’s a mechanic that you trust.
Finding a good auto shop
Look for AAA approved shops that offer a 12-month warranty on their work. ASA and Better Business Bureau members also pledge to keep to high ethical standards, and the BBB can mediate if things go wrong. Some shops will also have the Blue Seal from the Automotive Service Excellence Organization that tests a mechanic’s knowledge.
