How You Can Get Subsidized Rent Through The Section 8 Housing Program

For some families, finding decent affordable housing can be difficult. In response the US government developed the Section 8 program, which helps low income families, the elderly, and the disabled afford the cost of living. It also provides incentives to landlords who will consider working with local housing authorities.
How does Sector 8 work?
Each year, every state receives a grant from the federal government. Each state uses this funding both to cover the cost of the Section 8 program and to pay for a portion of the tenants’ rent and utility costs, usually around 70% of it.
What are the advantages of Sector 8 housing?
Assistance with housing costs means that families on a smaller income can make their budgets stretch further and reduces the US poverty rates. Some traditional social housing projects have been badly affected by crime, and placing families in privately owned rental properties breaks the cycle. Better neighborhoods can mean more job opportunitiesand education for participating Sector 8 families.
What are the disadvantages of Sector 8 housing?
Many see it as a burden on the taxpayer, and some argue that public funds should be spent on other issues that affect everyone such as healthcare. Since everything is done by individual states, the management and delivery can vary massively. Also because the scheme is managed across multiple departments in a public agency there can be problems with accountability, which again can lead to bad management of applications.
