What kind of qualification do I need to work as an accountant?
If you want to be a fully fledged accountant and max out your earning potential then CPA accreditation is what you should strive for. CPA accreditation is the most recognized qualification for an accountant in the US. CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. To achieve a CPA accreditation an accountant will have passed the Uniformed Certified Public Accountant Examination. They will also have the required experience and education standards for this accreditation.
How do I work towards CPA accreditation?
A CPA qualification designates an accountant as an expert in their field, so as you might expect, it’s not a qualification that comes easily. You will need an undergraduate degree and a postgraduate qualification such as a Masters. Eligibility to sit the Uniformed Certified Public Accountant Examination varies a little by state, however all states will require a degree of experience. To sit the exam some states will require you to have 2 years experience in accounting or tax preparation whilst other states will accept general accounting experience. The exam is comprised of four parts and these are:
- Audit and Attestation
- Financial Accounting and Reporting
- Regulation (requires knowledge of state and federal law)
- Business Environment and Concepts
If I just want to work in accounting but have no interest in being an CPA accountant what courses should I consider?
There are accountant jobs out there for accountants who are not CPA Accountants. You will still need an undergraduate degree in accounting but further education is not strictly necessary (though you will be competing against candidates who may have a Masters too). Accountants without CPA accreditation will not be able to carry out official audits or review and finalise financial statements.
Who offers accounting courses?
All major schools offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses. You can also consider an online course if going to school is not an option for you. As you research your options consider what area of accounting you might like to specialize in since certain courses and schools offer tailored courses.
