How Credit Repair Can Help You Build a Stronger Financial Future

Having a poor credit score can seem like a vicious circle, and it can seriously affect your ability to borrow and manage your day to day expenses. The good news is that there are things that you can do to stop things getting any worse and to improve the situation.
What can affect your credit rating
The first step is understanding the main factors that can affect your credit score, so you can avoid them if possible. Paying bills late or not paying them at all is a major source of problems. Maxing out your credit card and not paying balances off regularly can also be seen as high risk behavior, and seriously affect your score. Applying for new lines of credit too often or having applications refused is another risk factor, as is referral to debt collection agencies.
What you can do about it
Practicing good financial housekeeping and paying bills on time will start to improve your profile over time. If you find it difficult to get credit at all, then applying for a ‘bad credit credit card’ and handling it well can also establish evidence of responsible money management.
It’s important to get a credit report and check to see if there are any inaccuracies. There may be mistakes in your personal details such as listing an old address, or errors in the information that lenders have passed to credit agencies. If you know that a lender you fell foul of has gone bust, then ask to have any reports from them removed – credit agencies can only keep records where the lender can provide proof.
Credit Cleaning Agencies
There are agencies that can try and improve your credit score for you. They usually ask for a payment up front of around $60 and then a monthly fee of a similar amount. Some operate on a ‘no win no fee’ basis, but there are many scams out there, so you need to check their reviews and the fine print carefully. Ideally they should offer you a money back guarantee.
In reality they will take the steps that you could do yourself, such as checking for mistakes on your records, but some of them will have insider tricks of the trade that can help. They can also try and negotiate with lenders on your behalf, but beware that some lenders will refuse to deal with credit repair services.
Take action
Whether you decide to take action yourself or with the help of an agency, the important thing is to do something, so you are not being penalized by incorrect or unverifiable information sitting on your file.
