5 Essential Steps To Start Making Investments Without Losing Your Savings

When making investments it’s very important to think about what you want to achieve. Do you want to make money now? Do you want a retirement plan? What you want to get out of it will dictate what sort of investments you make. Here’s how to make a start on making investments.
Financial plan
Make a plan of your aims in investing. If you want a retirement plan then you will want much ‘safer’ investments that will mean smaller, but steadier, returns. However if retirement is still a fair distance away, you may want to make some riskier investments where the returns are also higher. Figure out how much disposable income you have, and how much you could afford to lose if the worst did happen. If you are doing this for the first time it would be sensible to get some financial advice from a professional.
Do your research
Get online and find out about different forms of investment. Purchasing securities for example (such as stock or bonds) means you could lose all your money, so it might not be sensible to invest all your money here. Find out which banks and credit unions are federally insured if you plan to save money in this way. In any case, it’s a good idea to spread your portfolio of investments across low and higher risk categories, so you benefit from some higher returns but without taking on too much risk. This is better known as diversifying.
Look after your investments
Make sure the rest of your finances are in order. If you have credit cards, make sure you have paid them off (especially if they have a high APR) before you invest money in something else. Also, it makes sense to have a pot of money put aside in case of emergencies. Be careful of fraud – if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
